Birding Sri Kanka again! Part 4 Kitugala Rainforest 16th-18th October 2025

Kitugala Rainforest

Thursday 16th, A short bus ride from the hotel took us to a road that led into the rainforest to a known place to find Blackcap Babler and within a little while we were watching one, and then a recently arrived Indian Pitta

We also had excellent views of a Tickell's Blue Flycatcher a new bird for me this trip so was pleased to get a second and better look.

Later in the day we took the ferry to the other side of the river and explored more of the forest

Here apart from the forest there were tea plantations of the Gold variety of tea.

Other birds photographed today were

Chestnut-headed Bee-eater

Purple-rumped Sunbird

Yellow-browed Bulbul

Red-backed Flameback

Banded Bay Cuckoo

Friday 17th, before breakfast we went back across the river using the rope bridge just upstream from the hotel.

Our main target was the Green-billed Coucal which we had missed out on so far, Ashoka manged to pick up the call and we eventually got some views all be it distant and always with foliage obscurring the bird.

We later were treated a glimpse of an Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, from where I was standing it was partly obscured however was a new bird for me.

Back at the hotel while having breakfast a Red-backed Flame back was the only bird of note.

Disappointingly for some reason we didn't venture out again in the morning, I was hoping that we could have another go at seeing a Serendips Scops Owl. So I took the opportunity to have a swim.

At lunch time it started raining and continued all afternoon and into the evening so no more birding was done.

Saturday 18th, another pre-breakfast walk over the rope bridge to try and have another look for the Coucal but it wasn't to be the only bird of note was an Orange-billed Babler

A Wood Spider and Brown Mongoose were also seen

The most common bird species was the Red-vented Bulbul so I had to get one more photo of one!

After breakfast, we packed our bags and headed for the airport, stopping en route at a busy restaurant.

We arrived at the airport around 2pm so had a long wait for my 20.20 flight. (However not as long as some of the group) arriving back at Gatwick at 06.40. on the 19th

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip despite a couple of disappointments. The rest of the group were great and were good company. I saw 201 species of bird, 4 of which were new to me but missed out on 3 of the endemics.

I hope to return again some day soon.

Birding Sri Lanka again Part 3, Horton Plains to Kitugala 14th - 15th October 2025

Tuesday 14th October, An early start again but this time the group got into 3 cars and we made our way up the winding roads to The Horton Plains National Park

We spent a couple of hours along this road hoping for the Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush but with such dense undergrowth it was not to be, I was hoping to see the Sri Lanka Bush Warbler better than I did last time I was here. This time it put on a good show but hard to photograph as it continually moved within the dense foliage.

Other birds seen and photographed were

Common Tailorbird

Sr Lanka White-eye (e)

Dull Blue Flycatcher

Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher

Cinerous Tit

Tri-coloured Munias

Flycatcher?

Our return journey back to the hotel for lunch took us over the railway crossing at the highest point of the Sri Lanka Railway at 1900 metres, with my interest in railways I had to stop and get a couple of photos.

Pattipola Station

After lunch at the hotel we went to Victoria Park, it was far quieter than 2 years ago but the highlight was seeing a brief  Sri Lanka Scimitar Babler and a returning Kashmir Flycatcher.

With the light going we returned to the hotel for dinner.

Wednesday 15th, not quite such an early start as we took the short journey to the Scout Camp road our last chance for the Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush but despite searching one couldn't be found. We did however see several Sri Lanka Wood Pigeons unlike my previous visit. However they were distant and in silhouette.

We also saw another Sri Lanka Bush Warbler but my camera wouldn't focus on it for some reason and then a Bar-winged Flycatcher Shrike and the camera worked.

We returned to the hotel for breakfast, packed our bags and left the highlands.

Our break in the journey was at the tea castle where some of the group made a purchase. In the gardens it was fairly quiet bird wise other than this Scaly Munia.
