Sunday 29th Jan. SWW Pulborough and the Burgh

Starting at Pulborough, walked down to Jupp's view, usual ducks and geese, Goldcrests and a Firecrest in bramble near the conifers.
Walk around Wiggonholt Common 20-30 Crossbills by the dump

Back at the visitors centre the Water Rail eventually showed  



Next a walk around Rackham woods, Marsh, Coal, Longtailed Tits, Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Greater Spotted Woodpecker and sounds of others. Then onto the Burgh in a dull and windless afternoon, 12 plus Yellow Hammers, Grey Partridge, single Red Kite several common Buzzards, prolonged views of 1 may be 2 Short-eared Owls but no sign of the Rough-legged Buzzard.

Monday 23rd Jan in search of the 1st.W Caspian

An afternoon trip to Dunge to see if I could find the Caspian. on arrival the gull roost was empty apart from a few Herring and Greater Black Backed by the road. On the beach a few gulls were around the fishing boats. On the sea good numbers of Guillemots, Razorbills, Great Crested Grebes.
The 2nd W Glaucous Gull was around the fishing boats then posed on top of one

No sign of the Caspian this afternoon, but had been reported in the morning and seen again the next morning.

Sunday 22nd SWW Thorney Island

An early start dissapointment as the footpath was closed from the security gate.
but.
Marsh Harrier, Brents, Pintail, Red-breasted Mergansers, and a Kingfisher on the wire by the Great Deeps


Moving on to Hayling Island for another look at the SHORE LARK in very windy conditions at hightide it was sharing the spit with hundreds of Dunlin and Ringed Plover.



On next to Warblington find the CATTLE EGRET we couldn't find last Thursday.

Then onto West Dean Woods

Red Kite on the way, Fieldfares,Nuthatch, Linnets, Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, Gold Crest,
HAWFINCHES, and a large flock of Chaffinches and a possible Brambling amoungst them.

Burton Mill pond 4 Mandarins flew over, no sign of the Bittern, Pochard and Tufted on the lake, Commorants and Pied Wagtails coming into roost, Tawney Owl calling

19th Jan, a Twitch to Hants.

First stop to Calshott for the Spanish Sparrow, an hour and a half later still no show so off to the New Forest for the Dark-eyed Junco




Back to Calshott for the Sparrow which was found straight away


From Calshott to Gosport for the Ring-billed Gull found on the boating lake

From here off to Portsmouth (IOW Ferrie dock) for the Iceland Gull seen as driving into the carpark.



From here onto Hayling Island where the Shore Lark was on the Oyster beds and then on to Warblington for the Cattle Egret where our luck had ran out and it couldn't be found.

Sunday 8th Jan a trip into West Sussex

Hearing of an Iceland Gull in Shoreham set off in search, sadly after 2 hours around the harbour decided along with several others it had moved on.
In the harbour,
3 Razorbills
2 Purple Sandpipers
4 Rock Pipits on the beach.

At Widewater a pair of Red-breased Mergansers
Further west along the beach 2 Snow Buntings showing well.
Onto the Burgh

Red Legged Partridge
Grey Partridge
1 Common Buzzard
1 Rough-legged Buzzard
12 Corn Buntings

Ringtailed Hen Harrier

Waltham Brooks 2-3 Short-eared Owls

Sat. 7th Jan SWW Pett Pools and Dungeness

Pett Pools
12 Whitefronts
4 Pink foots
Brents, Canadas, Greylags
1 Bar-headed Goose
Dungeness New Diggings from the causeway
2 Ruddy Ducks (which are no more)
1 Blacknecked Grebe
2 Great White Egrets
ARC pit
5 Redhead, 1 Drake Smew
Goldeneye, plus the usual ducks and harriers over.
20 -30 Tree Sparrows at the entrance to the reserve.
Long Tailed duck well in the distance from the visitor centre


On the beach no sign of the 1W Caspian but 2W Glaucous showed well.
On the sea loads of Great Crested Grebes, Guillemots, Razorbills. 1 distant Gannet, 1Kittiwake

Walland Marsh 35 Bewicks including 2 juveniles
At the Harrier roost up to 15 Marsh Harriers came in but no Hen Harriers.

2012 A New year and a new list

Sadly I have lapsed blogging my observations since May 2010. My 2012 resolutuion is to get back to it. So lets see how long this lasts!
